Learning about Civil Engineering with Dearborn STEM Academy

On Wednesday, May 7th, Nitsch hosted Dearborn STEM Academy students in our Boston office to learn about civil engineering!

Dearborn STEM Academy is a Boston Public School that focuses on providing 6th-12th grade students with a “deep understanding of the language, concepts, and ideas represented in STEM fields.” Their monthly speaker series helps to introduce students to professionals working in different engineering fields. Nitsch has been involved in this program since its launch in 2021.

Led by Alexa Brennan, PE, Moses Motovu, EIT, and Benjamin Root, EIT, Nitsch talked to the students about what civil engineers do, how to read a plan set, and why stormwater management is important. The students participated in a LEGO challenge that illustrated how drafting designs works, then built a model stormwater infiltration system. The program ended with a conversation about what a “day in the life” looks like for a young civil engineer.

Working with Dearborn STEM Academy students for the past five years has been a rewarding way to engage students with the idea of engineering – and we’re already looking forward to next year!
